Data Recovery - FAQs

There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you realise that your data is gone. All that work, all those ideas, just gone.

Or is it? Here at BrightCall, we often recover data that the owners’ thought was gone forever. Sometimes it is a very simple task, sometimes we have to go to extreme lengths to recover very valuable data, but it is rare that it is impossible to get back your virtual assets.

What should I do if I have lost data?

Absolutely nothing. Don't touch a thing until you have talked to us. Installing free recovery software from the Internet or running programs to check your disk is just as likely to overwrite your precious files as recover them. If you need those files back, stop dead in your tracks and call.

When is it easy to recover files?

Easy is a relative term. The easier end of file recovery is simply when the software you are using loses track of where it has put your files, maybe it is in the recycle bin, maybe it is just in a part of the disk that the system no longer uses. Windows doesn't normally remove files, so much as just adds the space they were taking up to the list of free space for new files to be written into. If you carry on using the system that is actually what will happen. At BrightCall we remove the disk and work on it in a non-destructive way until we have recovered the data.

Can corrupted files be recovered?

Often files are right there in plain view, but the programs you use refuse to open them. Classic examples are Outlook files that you know contain tens of thousands of emails, but Outlook says are empty. Although we cannot guarantee the recovery of data from such files, the chances are good and we have a proven track record.

What happens if the hardware is broken?

Disk drives are mechanical devices and all mechanical devices fail in time. The only unknown is when. At BrightCall we work with a specialist clean-room laboratory to recover data from such drives. Whether the problem is with the electronics on the drive or even inside drives on the ultra delicate heads and surfaces where the data is actually stored.

This combination of extreme microscopic engineering with BrightCall’s software experience means we can do more than recover the data, we can present you with a working system at the end of the process.

What about backups?

If you are reading this article there is a good chance you have lost data and the last thing you want to read about is back ups because if you had backups you would not be trying to find out about data recovery.

However, when you are back and working, backups will be very much on your mind and we can advise you on how to take a risk based approach to such things. We work with you to understand all of the likely risks to your system (fire, theft, hardware failure, factors specific to your environment) and formulate a strategy to knock each one down in turn.

What should I do now?

What you need now is a set of experienced professionals with a calm, but urgent, approach to lead you through the process of recovering your data. Which is exactly what you have found in BrightCall.
