Virus Removal and Protection - FAQs

Who are these people?

The public perception of a virus writer is a spotty youth typing away in a back bedroom, unable to get a girlfriend and hell bent on mindless vandalism to prove how clever he is to his equally sad friends. And in fact, that was a good photofit for the attackers of yesterday. Now the people attacking your computer are criminals, mostly from the former eastern block.

What do they gain from it?

Money. They make money by popping up ads on your screen (which even if you do not click on, one person in a million does). They make money by redirecting your web search away from a legitimate online shop to their dodgy one. They make money by stealing your information to use in identity theft. They make money by capturing your passwords and accessing your online bank account. They make money by using your PC to send spam or attack other PCs.

In fact the ways they make money just keep on increasing (they are an inventive lot).

But I have anti-virus software!

Even your grandmother knows that you have to have anti-virus software on your PC. However, on its own it is simply not enough to protect you. You need a firewall, you need to run your windows updates, you need to run anti-spyware software and you need to keep all of this up to date. Anything less and you are a sitting duck.

How can I tell if my PC has been infected?

It is not always easy to tell. Every day we work on PCs that traditional anti-virus software claims to be clean only to find them horribly compromised. Here are some key clues to look for on your PC:

  1. Your PC runs a lot slower than when you purchased it.
  2. As you surf the web a lot of extra windows pop-up on unrelated topics advertising various things.
  3. Your web browser has tool bars along the top that you did not put there.
  4. Software that worked in the past frequently crashes for no good reason.

If you have any of these symptoms there is a good chance your defences have been compromised and instead of working for you, your PC is working for the bad guys.

What should I do now?

Call us. This is such an incredibly common problem that we run a full time production line to analyse, clean and protect PCs from infections. We take each PC, isolate it, hit it with a barrage of scans, recover your data, return the machine to its factory shipped state and set-up first class protection.

The process has been defined and refined over numerous PCs until we believe we have the most advanced and convenient way of removing the bad stuff and returning you to where you want to be.

If you think you have a problem, just give us a call (0118 962 5690) or send us an email.
